The Sistine Chapel before Michelangelo
on Tuesday, July 16 at 5:00PM
ACCENT Study Center
The Sistine Chapel is particularly famous for its decorative vault, painted by Michelangelo in 1508-1512 for pope Julius II della Rovere, and for its celebrated 'Last Judgment' fresco, which was later added to the altar wall. While perhaps less well-known, the decorative lateral walls of the chapel, painted by Umbrian painter Pietro Perugino and the Florentine painters Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli, are equally remarkable. The lecture will analyze the historical events surrounding Lorenzo il Magnifico’s decision to send the best Florentine painters of the time to work in Rome for the pope, and will reconstruct the original appearance of the Sistine Chapel before Michelangelo's intervention.
